BLOGMAS DAY NINETEEN | WORKING AT CHRISTMAS

At the grand old age of 21 I have only ever worked one Christmas Eve (the day my contract as a temp ran out). That was 4 years ago. This year I was fortunate enough to gain a permanent job contract (albeit just a weekend job) but this means that I have to work Bank Holidays. So I will be working Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, Bank Holiday (Tuesday) and New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and the Bank Holiday (Monday). Working over New Year doesn’t really bother me because I’ve never done anything to celebrate a New Year other than watch the TV and wish family a happy new year when the clock strikes midnight. Working Christmas Eve doesn’t bother me either because my family don’t really do anything then. It’s more the working Boxing Day that I’m kind of sad about. For the past couple of years my parents and I have gone to visit my brother and his family to spend a half a day celebrating the holidays with them.

I know I’m fortunate in the sense that I at least have Christmas Day off because so many people have to work that day, but I can’t help feel sad because I know this is the beginning of my adult working life and it won’t be long before I move away from my hometown where most of my family live, and who knows how often I’ll be able to spend quality time with them.

Working over Christmas probably won’t be as bad as I think it will be, it’s not like I’m the only person working. The only thing is that I hope people are kind to people working, especially be kind to people who are working in retail (like me).

Another short post today, I only have another 5 posts left of blogmas and then I’m taking time off until New Year when I have another couple of posts planned. Hope everyone’s having a great day.
